Finding High Quality Wedding Photography

High quality wedding photography is an important element in today’s wedding planning process because apart from the new crystal wedding cake jewelry it is the one thing element that provides the couple with a tangible reminder of how wonderful their big day was. The question, however, is what makes up a high quality wedding photographer?

If a couple does not know how to identify a high quality wedding photographer the chances are not good that they will stumble upon one. Indeed, the chances are good they will end up with average or even poor wedding pictures, giving them low value for their money. But how do you avoid it?

Unfortunately, even if they have the money simply going out and hiring the most expensive photographer around is no guarantee that a young couple will end up with the best wedding pictures period, much less the best value for the money. Likewise, hiring the photographer that is booked many months in advance is no guarantee, though both are indicators that they might have the requisite skills to do the job that you want.

However, these are just indicators and since most people cannot afford to simply go out and hire the most expensive and don’t have the time to hire the wedding photographer that is booked two years in advance it is necessary to find out how to get the best value for your money. In other words, what specifically are you paying the photographer at your wedding to do or have?

  • Technical Knowledge and Equipment: This is obvious. It is also the least important aspect since there are any number of people qualified in this area. Still, to find someone that is really skilled a couple needs to look at a portfolio of ENTIRE WEDDINGS, not just a collage of the best of a variety of weddings. Take enough pictures and anyone can put together an album of great photos.
  • Interpersonal Ability: Assuming the photographer has good technical knowledge and the equipment, this is probably the single most important factor in finding a good photographer and therefore ending up with the best possible pictures. A couple gets the best value from a photographer that sets them and their family at ease because the posed pictures will look most natural and the candid pictures will be more candid.
  • Time and Labor: This is where you can save yourself the big bucks. If a couple keeps their photographer all day, it is going to cost more. That is obvious. Schedule the wedding day in such a way that it gets the photographer in and out and the price should be less.  Schedule the wedding early enough that they can do another wedding and you might save even more.  Is there a need to keep the photographer throughout the reception? Usually the first half hour is enough and some have found that the photographer need not be at the reception at all.
  • Popularity: Like anything else, the most popular wedding photographers command the highest prices. This might be an indicator that they are good, or it might simply indicate that they have the right friends. Find one that sets the couple at ease, has good skill, and is relatively unknown and the couple should be able to save money.

Of course, the big selling point of the wedding photography industry is that they are selling, not just pictures, but memories. They have a point. Ultimately when we buy wedding pictures we are buying a tangible record of the wedding day. How much is that worth? Of course, that is something that only the individuals involved can decide, but by taking into account the above four elements of wedding photography, a couple should be able to find someone to provide that high quality wedding photography that will reflect their big day for years to come.
